Profil

The Bachelor study program „Mathematics“ is a four-year program offered by Al-Farabi University. Tuition of around € 2.000 – € 3.500 (depending on the applicants’ nationality) is charged annually. For winners of government grants the tuition is waived. The study program is part of an consecutive program. Programme graduates must be able to apply, both in research and practice, their professional qualifications in a number of areas of modern mathematics, such as mathematical analysis, algebra and mathematical logic, Operations Research, probability theory, mathematical statistics, Scientific Computing, differential equations and others. Programme graduates must be competitive on a labour market possessing, in addition to profound knowledge in the area of mathematics, high creative potential, integrity, effective labour management and team work skills as well as desire to further develop his/her educational and professional level in the future. Programme graduates must become comprehensively educated specialists possessing fundamental political, social and economic knowledge, high level of general intelligence, humanitarian culture of thinking, literate and developed speech. The general curriculum contains Kazakh (Russian) Language, Information Science, Foreign Language, Mathematical Analysis I, Algebra I, Analytical Geometry in the 1st semester. The 2nd semester contains History of Kazakhstan, Kazakh (Russian) Language, Foreign Language, Mathematical Analysis II, Algebra II and Programming. Furthermore it contains Philosophy, Ecology and Sustainable Development, Foreign Language, Mathematical Analysis III, Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Logic, one elective module in the general education and one elective module in the basic modules in the 3rd semester. The 4th semester contains Basics of Economic Theory, Sociology, Mathematical Analysis IV, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Measure and Integral and the elective module II in the basic modules. The 5th semester includes three basic elective modules, Functional Analysis, Equations of Mathematical Physics, Theory of Functions of Complex Variables and one elective profile module. It contains Political Science, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, one basic elective module, Differential Geometry and Topology, Numerical Methods of Task – Solving in Mathematical Physics and two elective profile modules in the 6th semester. The 7th semester contains Basics of Law, Theoretical Mechanics, two elective basic modules, Calculus of Variations and Methods of Optimization and two elective profile modules. The last semester contains an internship as well as the State Examination and the Thesis in the 8th semester. Applicants for the Bachelor-program must have a document certifying their secondary or vocational education. All applicants are required to take either a Unified National Testing (final certifying exam for current-year secondary school, gymnasium, lyceum, college graduates) or complex testing (entrance exam for other categories of applicants). Testing which is conducted as a written group test consists of 5 subjects: Mathematics, Native language, History of Kazakhstan, Kazakh for Russian school graduates, Russian for Kazakh school graduates, and an elective subject (one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, World History, Kazakh Literature (Russian Literature), Foreign Language). Applicants are required to elect Physics if they wish to apply for the Mathematics/Physics program. Students are enrolled every September.

The auditors consider the engagement of the lecturers, the excellent student-to-teacher ratio in general as well as the international cooperation and teaching-exchanges in physics particularly positive.
